LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – It’s a mission and a building to help curve the number of young people experiencing homelessness in Arkansas. On Tuesday, the nonprofit Immerse Arkansas held a groundbreaking for its youth shelter in Little Rock.

Those with the organization said $2.3 million dollars have been donated, and although they’re working to raise money to $3 million dollars, they say they’re still happy they had enough to break ground and start the road to building a space meant to protect young people. Officials with the nonprofit also said it will be the first of its kind in the state to be a shelter for youth.

A first-of-its-kind shelter will house 15 people aged 18-24 without a permanent place to live. The goal is to help plan their future while overcoming past hardships.

Soon, young adults will have a place where they can overcome hardships from their past and plan their futures. Immerse Arkansas Executive Director Eric Gilmore explained that it's going to be more than just a shelter. 

"They're going to be surrounded by people who love them are going to have a therapist, they're gonna have a coach, they're gonna have their own bedroom, they're gonna have their own bathroom," Gilmore said.

At the 35th annual Arkansas Business of the Year Awards, Little Rock nonprofit Immerse Arkansas took home the title of nonprofit organization of the year. Fellow nominees included the Arkansas Support Network, Excellerate Foundation, Goodwill Industries of Arkansas, and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Jonesboro.

Immerse is a Central Arkansas organization combating the confusion and loss many teens and young adults face. Immerse was established in 2010 after Eric and Kara Gilmore watched a child they had cared for through the welfare system experience the exact scenario of being left at the bus station.

Immerse Arkansas, a Little Rock-based nonprofit that serves youth in crisis, recently hired Mojadesinuola Adejokun, Alicen Bennett, Robert Butler, Debbie Chambers, Jana Coleman, Chelsea Taylor and Letha Todd. The organization also created five new positions to expand its staff.
